All about YOU (aka, lurkers come outta the corner!)

I’ll be honest here.  Sometimes it feels a little weird sitting at my computer, talking to thousands of people while I don’t hear much back.  Haha – the dynamics are weird if you really think about it.  Like I’m on my own little personal microphone in an empty room and the only way that I know people are actually listening-slash-reading is due to my good friend Google Analytics.  I really love Google Analytics, because I can see how many people are reading and when, so whew, I know all this work is actually being read!

Truth be told, I don’t comment on blogs a ton myself since I don’t know what to say sometimes!  I’d really, really (really) like to hear from even a fraction of the people reading this!  So, let’s make this easy on you.

Answer a few (or all!) of the following questions…..

1.  Where are you from?  Why do you live there?  Do you like it?
2.  What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled, or your dream destination?
3.  How did you hear about this blog?
4.  What makes you come back to keep reading?  What is your favorite part of the story so far?
5.  What would you like to see happen on this blog?  What would you actually read?   Book reviews?  My other work?
7.  Tell me a fun random fact about either you, a random piece of knowledge most people don’t know, or your favorite life tip?

I’ll go first.

1.  Where are you from?  Why do you live there?  Do you like it?
From Minnesota (surprise, surprise).  I live here since it’s close to a lot of my family, and I’ve come to value that a lot, especially with a kid.  My husband, who is not from MN, loves it here.  I like it a lot, every season except for winter can’t be beat.  That said, we can’t wait to possibly make a move in the next 8-10 years, probably California.

2.  What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled, or your dream destination?
OMG too many to choose.  The Azores Islands in Portugal, Key West, Venice in Italy, Australia, Dominican Republic are a few of the best countries I’ve been to….my passport is full and happy.  My favorite cities in the US are Sonoma, NYC, San Francisco, and Sanibel Island.

Next,  I want to go Africa, first on a safari (Maybe in Kenya?) then a trip to South Africa.  And hit up Asia, like China, Korea, Bali, and Hong Kong.  And South America!  Can’t forget that.  Ok, I’ll shut up now ’cause otherwise we’d be here forever.  My goal in life is to hit 100 countries before I die.

3.  How did you hear about this blog?
I started it!  So, in my head, I guess?

4.  What makes you come back to keep reading?  What is your favorite part of the story so far?
I don’t so much as read it as actually write it…. My favorite is hearing what you think of the story, my writing, and the characters.  I LOVE it when I see people get chatting about the story line or something that happened.

5.  What would you like to see happen on this blog?  What would you actually read?   Book reviews?  My other work?
I’d love to make this site into an area to show off my other work, connect with you guys, and just have a fun community where it is more interactive.

I added the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons on comments to see if that will help with interactions.  So far the jury is out.  A lot more people are participating, but the comments are way down.  So, if they stay is TBD.

7.  Tell me a fun random fact about either you, a random piece of knowledge most people don’t know, or your favorite life tip?
I love, love, love my gel manicure kit.  It has saved me about a zillion dollars on manicures, not to mention time in the nail salon.  My life tip to you is to BUY ONE!

Oh, and always put Lemishine in your dishwasher, even if you don’t have hard water.  Best thing ever!

(told you it was supposed to be random info)

Also, would you consider “liking” the Minne Apple Girl page on Facebook?  I’ll give you a (virtual) shiny gold star if you do! 🙂

I am a lurker. I also never know what to say. I don’t have a lot of time either!
I am a SAHM. My older son is 2.5 and my new son is 2 weeks old. I read to pass time waiting at the end of my pregnancy and now when I am confined to the couch a big portion of the day. 🙂
I love to read, so I read a lot of these fictional blogs. I don’t have nearly as much time as I would like to read whole books. Maybe once this little one sleeps more!
Sorry I didn’t answer all your questions, but honestly don’t have the energy. I just wanted to come out of lurking like you asked. 🙂

    • Riley May says:

Ha! Don’t worry about not answering the questions, it was just something to get the ball rolling. Wow, 2 kids? That’s awesome, more than I could handle and I don’t blame you for not having the energy!!

I remember going years reading maybe 2-3 whole books a year….and I love reading. But my problem was a zillion years of graduate school! Ah I love school though!!

Thanks so much for coming out of lurk-dom, hearing from people makes writing about a million times more fun!

      • Amy says:

It was a big adjustment to go from 1 to 2. I think for me it was harder than going from 0 to 1. We are getting the hang of it now though so it’s all good! I am all done though… This baby factory is shut down! Lmao.

I am in school as well. I have an associates degree.. working on another. I took this semester off. I have 2 more left. Busy busy! Gotta do it all when we are young right? 🙂

        • Riley May says:

I am torn between doing it when the kids are young vs old! I went back once when my son was 2 years old (masters degree #1) and then again when he was 6 (MBA). I have to say it was easier when he was older since he could play on his own, but it was nice to have the degree to help get a good job when he was in school. Eh, it’s all a toss up, right? 🙂

  2. Arooj says:

I’m not really a lurker I guess, although this is the only blog where I’m not. I don’t think I’ve ever really commented on the other blogs I’ve read. But I’ll answer the questions anyway.

    1. Where are you from? Why do you live there? Do you like it?
I’m from Toronto, as you already know. I was born here and I absolutely love this city! It is my heart and soul.
    2. What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled, or your dream destination?
The only places I’ve travelled to, in Canada: Quebec; in the US: New York City, Buffalo, Boston and Atlanta; Pakistan (where my family is from) and Prague. My DREAM trip is Ireland!
    3. How did you hear about this blog?
I heard about it when you commented on the Love, Sex and Pizza blog.
    4. What makes you come back to keep reading? What is your favorite part of the story so far?
Everything! I don’t know, I can’t pinpoint one thing. I’m a picky reader, so when I like something I REALLY like it.
    5. What would you like to see happen on this blog? What would you actually read? Book reviews? My other work?
Would love to read book reviews as I’m always looking for new things to read, but I’m picky with my time. What kind of other work do you have?
    7. Tell me a fun random fact about either you, a random piece of knowledge most people don’t know, or your favorite life tip?
My favourite music group is the Backstreet Boys! And my favourite Boy is Nick Carter! I’ve been a fan for more than half my life, and I remain a true teenybopper in that sense.

    • Riley May says:

Ha! Of course you aren’t a a lurker, in fact, I totally feel like I “know” you best of all the people!

It’s awesome to hear you talk about Toronto. I’ve only been once, like I told you, but though it’s hubby’s hometown he’s kinda “meh” about it. Like he’ll always like it because it’s “home” but he even once told me that if it wasn’t for his family living there he really wouldn’t care if he ever went back. I liked it, but really it reminded me of Chicago! Hard to say too though since a lot of our trip was running around visiting people – didn’t get a good feel for the city in a way, ya know?

Ok, I also love the BSB! When I first started dating my husband, the BSB and NKOTB concert came into town! My friend and I were dying to go! But, naturally we needed an escort so we could enjoy the show, have loads of drinks, and not worry about a thing! Well, she was married and by husband laws he was able to say helllllz no I’m not going. So that left the new boyfriend. New boyfriends are obligated to bring their girlfriend and her friend to concerts they would normally avoid like the plague! Don’t think he was thrilled, but he did it! hahahaha

I’m working on a few other pieces – some business related, some fiction. Nothing to announce yet, just seeing what interest there is! It’ll come soon though!!

Thanks for always being an awesome commenter!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 helps me feel like I know the people reading!

  3. Lee says:

    1. Where are you from? Why do you live there? Do you like it?
I was born and raised in South Korea, and am still living there. Eh, I’d say it’s all right, living wise. But honestly, I’d like to be living in Texas where two of my closest friends (who also happen to be sisters) are living. I miss those girls a lot.

    2. What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled, or your dream destination?
IRELAND! It was the only place I’ve ever traveled on my own, and the only European country I’ve been to. I really loved that trip. Every where in Dublin was of walking distance, the weather wasn’t too cold, and the scenery… Oh, the scenery was just breath taking. I would’ve stayed and walked along the cliffs of Moher more if I could but alas…
I can’t wait to be able to have enough money for another trip. Countries that I will definitely like to see are: Japan, Scotland, Italy, France, Germany, Singapore, Turkey, and a much longer Ireland trip.

    3. How did you hear about this blog?
    Love, Sex, and Pizza blog!

    4. What makes you come back to keep reading? What is your favorite part of the story so far?
That would be the entertaining story-line and the author’s great attitude and awesome humor!
As for favorite part… That would be when Maddie blew up and ranted in front of her temp job coworkers and quit! Even though I thought she was being a bit too judgmental, it felt like a real person who reached her wits end.

    5. What would you like to see happen on this blog? What would you actually read? Book reviews? My other work?
Hmm… So far, I can’t really think. I really like what you’ve done with the whole blog, it’s just awesome! It’s definitely is the best blog I’ve seen, design-wise and with all the personal touches. Everything is just so cute, and leaves little crumbs as to who you are. And as for reading.. Well, I’d say I would read whatever you write! lol

    7. Tell me a fun random fact about either you, a random piece of knowledge most people don’t know, or your favorite life tip?
I use lol (laugh out loud) a lot while texting/typing. Oh, and in case you’re wondering how a girl who was born and raised, stamped and branded with the Korean seal of approval was able to have such awesome English skills, I lived in the states for a collective 11 years. 6, when I was a baby, and 5 years for college.

And that’s about all my tired brain can think of right now. Being in a different time zone sucks sometimes lol.

Hope you have a good day!

    • Riley May says:

Ok, you got me. At minimum, 50% of my friends and family members are ELS speakers (and well over 75% of former coworkers) so I’m pretty familiar with speaking/writing styles of non-native speakers. I was reading your response and was like, wow, how did she get to be so good? Then you explained it at the bottom and I was like “oh, that makes sense!” You must have been here when you were in mid-childhood to get the basics down so well!

I want to go to Ireland too! My hubby has always wanted to see the Olympics, so I would guess we’ll make it to Japan for that. Long ways off, but hey, gotta aim for an Olympics somewhere, right? Korea will be on the list too. But then again, my list is really big. Ha!!

Thanks for being such a great reader, and commenter! Makes my day to hear back from people!

(ok, I’m going to go swallow a whole bottle of cold medicine now. I’m sick!!!)

      • Lee says:

wow… that’s a lot of people who are ELS speakers that you know.
Well, I was in the states from when I was 2 to 8 years old… That really helped with my pronunciation but it really was the efforts of my parents that allowed my English to stay intact and even blossom a bit. My mom would have English teaching radio programs kept on during the mornings and night so we (my sis and I) would continue listening to English. And I kept studying English at schools and private tutors. My dad bought a whole bunch of disney animations when we returned to Korea so we kept on watching those as well. Making sure we don’t forget how things are said and to keep up with the listening portion of the language. Most of all, my parents encouraged us to read English books like the chronicles of Narnia and the babysitter’s club series all the time. We had a huge bookshelf just stuffed with English books when I was growing up. Those books are mostly donated/given/thrown away so not a lot of them left unfortunately.

Going to see the Olympics sounds awesome! If you do end in Korea some time, let me know. I might be able to point you to some good places to eat and show you some of the popular tourist spots. Just be prepared for the massive amounts of people in a tiny confined area.

Sorry that my reply was so late, and I hope your cold gets better! I think China has a similar cold remedy, but ginger and honey tea does wonders for a sore throat!

        • Riley May says:

Yeah, I guess most of the friends I made here are just from other parts of the world! And it’s awesome that your parents helped you keep up. I’m sure it has help you TONS in terms of work (not to mention blog reading!!) Plus, you said you attended college here. That’s awesome, do you have any plans to move back here? Or happy where you are?

I’m sure I’ll end up in Korea – my son is Korean (well, half ‘cuz I’m Caucasian!) So, he’ll want to see that one day. Right now he could care less, like any typical almost 10 year old boy. So maybe in a few years?

I never tried honey tea, but someone at my improv class gave me some Chinese herbs. My (Chinese) mother in law would be proud. LOL. As for me, I just bought a ton of Nyquil after I drank the packet of herbs. Mostly gone now, but my head was stuffed for DAYS.

  4. Hope says:

    1. Where are you from? Why do you live there? Do you like it?
I was born and raised on a small farm in south western Ontario, Canada. I have no plans on leaving since all my family, , friends and animals are here.

    2. What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled, or your dream destination?
I have not traveled at all because i milk cows morning and night so any trips I do take are only day trips, however I would love to see England, Greece, Ireland. …

    3. How did you hear about this blog?
    Love, Sex, and Pizza

    4. What makes you come back to keep reading? What is your favorite part of the story so far?
I really like the story line and find maddie easy to relate to, I cant think of a favourite part

    5. What would you like to see happen on this blog? What would you actually read? Book reviews? My other work?
I would definitely be a fan of book reviews, I love to read when I have extra time but haven’t been able recently due to helping run the farm and going to college

    7. Tell me a fun random fact about either you, a random piece of knowledge most people don’t know, or your favorite life tip?
What happened to #6. ? Lol
While I was writing this my hydro went out and scared the baby kangaroo I’m babysitting and he jumped up on my lap 🙂

    • Riley May says:

Hey! My in laws are from Ontario too! I’ll be up in that area in July to visit them.

And omg, did I skip 6? How embarrassing….:D

I am totally starting book reviews soon, and maybe another non-related blog but one that’d be fun all the same. Stay tuned there.

AND OMG I want to pet a baby kangaroo! How did you ever get one??? I’m dead jealous. I love love love animals, but only have 2 kitties. 🙁

  5. Hope says:

A friend runs petting zoos so she has all types of animals, she had to go to the states to pick up camels so I got to babysit for a few days. He is the sweetest little guy, he loves to hop around and play but when he gets tired he cuddles up and goes to bed.

  6. Leigh says:

Hi Riley! So I just started reading your blog. I am not caught up to the present yet, but I am really enjoying it! You are a talented writer and I appreciate all of the time and thoughtfulness you put into it!! I am married with no kids. I love traveling, probably fav place would be St. Thomas & St. John, where my husband and I went for our honeymoon.
Have you heard from Cosmo about the bedroom blog?? I think you’d do great, and I thought I saw on there that you applied, right?
I actually just got interviewed by Cosmo for their “secret life of marrieds” website article series, so you can get to know me more there too if you want. It’s the most open I’ve ever been with so many people. Kind of scary being so open but my husband and I hope that by being so open, we can encourage other people. Anyway, here’s the link if you want to check it out:

    • Riley May says:

I’m catching up a bit here myself, and wow, I am SO impressed with your story! Mostly for being open enough to share it with the world! Makes me wonder if I’d be that brave – I’d like to think so, but I really don’t have a secret life of anything, save for maybe those pair of shoes I’ve told my husband I’ve had forEVER! 😉

I had to read through all the articles – so great, I am going to bookmark it now for upcoming interviews!

I didn’t hear back yet about the blog, so assuming it’s a no go. Oh well, that just means I get another awesome one to read when it comes out!!

  7. Leigh says:

And of course I’d totally read other stuff if you wrote it! 🙂

  8. Leigh says:

I also loved France. Awesome place!! I forgot to say that. Random thing about me…. I often think of things to say after I hit “post” 🙂
